Early Shelby County history documented in book

Early days in Shelby County, OH, including the communities of Sidney, Berlin, Anna, Lockington, Port Jefferson, Hardin, and Montra, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this NEW 21 Page Booklet reprinted from the 1892 Centennial edition of Henry Howe's Historical Collections of Ohio, The Ohio Guide (a WPA Writers Project), and other hard-to-find sources. The spiral-bound booklet is one-sided on 60# paper with the fine print enlarged for easier reading. A sheet of clear vinyl has been added to protect the front cover.

Illustrations include the Public Square in Sidney in 1846 and again in 1887.

Among the many and diverse topics covered in the booklet are: Celoron de Blenville's Visit in 1749; Peter Loramie, Canadian French trader; Early Sidney; the Monumental Building; the Sacking of Pickawillany; the Visit of Christopher Gist; the Shawanoese Vocabulary and Wyandot/Huron Words; the German Catholic Community of Berlin; the Rev. William Bigot; and the Loramie Portage and Reservoir.

GENEALOGY BUFFS will find a list of 1888 county officers and businesses. The Howe history covers the development of this area until about 1890, while excerpts from the WPA book, give a nostalgic glympse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities. A 1933 look at the history of newspapers in Shelby County and maps showing the 88 Ohio counties and 1805 Ohio are also included.
