Ohio Garden Club to meet April 22 in Sidney

The Ohio Association of Garden Clubs, Region 5 Spring Meeting will be held Thursday, April 22, at the American Legion Hall, 1265 Fourth Ave., Sidney, Ohio.

The morning program will be Flower Show “Garden Patches” judged by OAGC Master Judge Juanita Wilkins. Lunch will be followed by afternoon program: “Floral Designs Inspired by Quilts of the Underground Railroad," presented by past OAGC State President Baby Sabickc.

Cost for the event is $14. Registration is due by April 16 to Ann Heeley, 1132 Spruce Ave., Sidney 45365.

Sidney yard waste program changes

Starting April 12, 2010, residents of Sidney will need to affix or attach a special yard waste tag to extra refuse. I guess think of it as postage for your trash! It's annoying to have to get used to something like this, but I think it's preferable to everyone having their waste fees increased. This way, only people who have extra trash have to pay. The tags run 90 cents each. It also encourages people to reuse and recycle to cut down the amount of garbage they produce. Check out the pdf page linked below to see all the details.

Another review of the movie 45365...the whole review is great to read, but here's a section of it.

"After all, the world is full of fascinating characters and events, and not all of them have to end with a call to action; some just help us see the world through someone else's eyes.

The comparison is especially apt with 45365. In making their love letter to the town they grew up in, the Ross brothers opted not to follow any individual story arc, instead floating from scene to scene in an underrated slice-of-life collage. They give equal attention to small town politics, teen drama, local talk radio, county fairs, cops and criminals and kids. They spend sad, lonely moments with strange old men and listen in on the off-color chatter of funny old women. The result is a sort of tone poem that resembles This American Life’s honest look at the everyday without either endorsing or condescending to its subjects.

What 45365 does better than anything is create a sense of place — and what it feels like to be in that place — and in that regard its willfully obscure title makes sense. The zip code of Sidney, Ohio is an extremely specific designation for the small town they’ve captured so well. But at the same time, this anonymous-seeming five digit code could correspond to any rural county, and the people whose lives we visit could as easily be in Idaho or Iowa or Alabama. 45365 isn’t the story of Sidney, but an encapsulation of the sweet, funny, peculiar and profound moments of small town life. For all of us who’ve grown up and moved on to the big city to find ourselves, it’s a warm feeling to return for these 90 minutes and remember fondly where we came from."

A look at Sidney

This video explains why The Spot is called The Spot - all about Big Rock (shocker, it's a big rock), and a look inside the beautiful People's Federal Savings and Loan Building, built in 1917. I did not know the information about the Big Four Bridge (I won't be a spoiler, you'll have to watch the video)

I appreciate the interviewer and think he did a good job, but I wonder why he doesn't take his hat off when he's eating in a restaurant (yeah, I guess I am old fashioned.) He mentions how Ohio has cities that share names from all over the world (Milan, London, Berlin, etc) then mentions that there's also a Sidney. It's not like Sydney Australia though - I guess he was just trying to be cute.

Overall, I think it's a good video though, do you agree?

Early Shelby County history documented in book

Description from e-Bay:

Early days in Shelby County, OH, including the communities of Sidney, Berlin, Anna, Lockington, Port Jefferson, Hardin, and Montra, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this NEW 21 Page Booklet reprinted from the 1892 Centennial edition of Henry Howe's Historical Collections of Ohio, The Ohio Guide (a WPA Writers Project), and other hard-to-find sources. The spiral-bound booklet is one-sided on 60# paper with the fine print enlarged for easier reading. A sheet of clear vinyl has been added to protect the front cover.

Illustrations include the Public Square in Sidney in 1846 and again in 1887.

Among the many and diverse topics covered in the booklet are: Celoron de Blenville's Visit in 1749; Peter Loramie, Canadian French trader; Early Sidney; the Monumental Building; the Sacking of Pickawillany; the Visit of Christopher Gist; the Shawanoese Vocabulary and Wyandot/Huron Words; the German Catholic Community of Berlin; the Rev. William Bigot; and the Loramie Portage and Reservoir.

GENEALOGY BUFFS will find a list of 1888 county officers and businesses. The Howe history covers the development of this area until about 1890, while excerpts from the WPA book, give a nostalgic glympse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities. A 1933 look at the history of newspapers in Shelby County and maps showing the 88 Ohio counties and 1805 Ohio are also included.
